Renewable Energy in Mexico Reaches 26% of Total Capacity

Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that renewable energy's share has grown to 26% through solar and wind projects. The company plans $30 billion in investments and grid modernization to enhance supply reliability.

Renewable energies represent nearly 26% of the installed electricity generation capacity in Mexico, driven mainly by photovoltaic and wind projects. This was reported by Emilia Calleja Alor, General Director of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), during her participation in the 'Energy and Innovation Fair for Transformation and Well-being', organized by the Ministry of Energy (SENER). This percentage represents an advance compared to 2024, when clean sources contributed 22.2% of the country's installed capacity. The official highlighted that this advance occurs in parallel with a process of expansion of the national electricity system, whose installed capacity has grown by more than 64% since 2010, exceeding 90,000 megawatts by 2025. As part of this strategy, the state-owned company contemplates investments of nearly 30 billion dollars during the current administration, through a portfolio of 58 projects that include the development of 138 transmission lines and 249 electrical substations. Calleja Alor emphasized that the transition to clean sources is not limited to the incorporation of new capacity, but also involves strengthening the operation of the electrical system. 'We must move towards increasingly clean energies without compromising the reliability of the system,' she stated. Among the most relevant projects is the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic plant in Sonora, which will have more than two million solar panels and a projected capacity of one thousand megawatts by 2028, enough to supply around 550,000 homes. The investment project also includes large-scale storage. Additionally, the company plans to complement the growth of renewable energies with new technologies, such as large-scale battery storage systems and reactive power compensation equipment, in order to stabilize the grid against the variability of these sources. 'We are already working on large-scale storage systems that will help us maintain grid stability in real time,' she indicated. The CFE director stressed that the modernization of the electrical system also allows for improving the reliability of the supply through real-time monitoring tools and grid automation, which facilitates anticipating failures and responding more quickly to contingencies. In this context, electricity coverage in Mexico reaches 99.7% of the population, a level close to universality and higher than the world average of 91.3%, according to the official. Finally, Calleja Alor reiterated that the company's objective is to build an electrical system that is 'cleaner, more robust, more flexible, and more reliable', which will allow the country's economic growth to be sustained without compromising operational stability.
