In Nuevo León, approximately 70% of families have pets according to the National Survey of Income and Expenditure in Households. Owners spend between 676 to 1500 pesos per month on feeding their animals, which amounts to an annual expense of between 1297 and 2880 pesos for Value Added Tax.
The PRI plans to propose a change in tax policy to eliminate VAT on pet food, with the goal of economically supporting Mexican families who have dogs, cats, and other small species. José Luis Garza Ochoa, state president of the tricolor party, explained that this measure aims to ensure adequate and balanced nutrition for pets and help families take care of them.
"The aim is to economically support families and people who shelter and protect these types of animals, as well as to ensure their proper and balanced nutrition," Garza Ochoa explained. This proposal will be beneficial for families seeking emotional support from pets, as well as for visually impaired individuals who rely on guide dogs and face additional care expenses.
The elimination of VAT on pet food would also be an important stimulus for dog and cat shelters and rescue operations, which face increasingly high costs for their rescue and sterilization work. Garza Ochoa emphasized the importance of supporting those who voluntarily and freely dedicate themselves to caring for pets in their environment, in a comprehensive approach that considers environmental protection and the well-being of all animal species.
