Mexico's papaya exports are expected to grow over time due to innovations in cold chain and packaging, focused on the demand from the U.S.

Export Projections of Papaya and Avocado in Mexico

According to a report, global papaya exports are expected to reach just under 0.4 million metric tons by 2033, with an expected average annual growth rate of 1.2 percent. Despite the highly perishable nature of the fruit, Mexico will remain the leading exporter of tropical fruits such as avocado, mango, and papaya in the next decade.

Global papaya production is projected to grow annually by 1.5 percent to 17 million tons in 2023, with only 2 percent destined for exports. Papaya exports will be influenced by the increase in production in Mexico and the demand from key importers.

In 2023, Mexican papaya exports experienced a contraction of 3 percent, with a 4 percent decrease in exports abroad due to adverse weather conditions. Most of the Mexican papaya export is destined for the United States.

Regarding mango, it is expected that Mexico will benefit from increased growth in import demand from its main market, the United States, reaching a share of 24 percent of global exports by 2033. The demand for mango has risen due to its perception as a rich nutrient source for health.

On the other hand, global avocado demand continues to rise due to its nutritional benefits, leading to a greater number of producing countries seeking to compete in the international market. Avocado production is projected to grow annually by 3.5 percent and reach 14 million tons annually by 2033, with Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic being the main producers, representing about 60 percent of global production by that date.
