Cybersecurity at Risk During Buen Fin 2024

The Citizen Council for Security and Justice of Mexico City has issued a warning to consumers regarding Buen Fin 2024, which will start this Friday and conclude next Monday, November 18. It is expected that during this event, attempts at cyberattacks will increase significantly, especially against e-commerce platforms, distributors, and package delivery companies. It is estimated that criminals could generate up to 6.8 billion pesos in revenue, which is 300% more than in previous events.

According to Rafael Chávez Monroy, country manager of F5 in Mexico, cybercriminals could achieve higher economic benefits during Buen Fin, reaching up to 11% more than in previous editions. The high profit rate is partly attributed to the low budget companies allocate to technology and cybersecurity compared to the global average.

Manuel Moreno, director of Information Security at IQSEC, highlights that online clothing, technology stores, travel agencies, and hotels are the main targets of cybercriminals during Buen Fin. Víctor Ruiz, CEO of Silikn, warns that consumers' personal and banking data may be at risk, which could result in significant reputational and economic damage for brands and customers.

In anticipation of potential cyberattacks, the financial sector has strengthened its security measures. Omar Herrera, director of Information Security at Stori, emphasizes the importance of protecting customer data, especially during high-activity periods like Buen Fin. Despite these additional measures, both experts and cybersecurity specialists agree on the importance of companies and consumers being cautious when making online transactions during this event.
