The Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) has expressed its concern about the 14% reduction in its budget, which will significantly affect the Elisa Acuña scholarship program granted to 16,000 students, as well as the payment of salaries for academic and administrative staff. This budget decrease, stemming from the 2025 Federation Expenditure Budget, implies the virtual elimination of the scholarship program and the inability to complete ongoing projects.
UAM emphasized that this reduction will negatively impact the institution's growth prospects and support for vulnerable sectors of the student community. Enrollment may be at risk, as the institution seeks to increase it to accommodate its 61,000 students. Therefore, they urgently call for a reconsideration of this cut and request the Congress of the Union to positively adjust the budget allocated for higher education.
In its words, the university reiterates its commitment to the efficient, austere, and transparent use of resources, aiming to ensure quality education for its students.
For its part, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has also expressed its concern over the impact that the budget reduction would have on approximately 110,000 students who receive support through scholarships. UNAM highlights the importance of having sufficient resources to provide quality public higher education.
The proposed cut in the Federation Expenditure Budget for 2025 contrasts with what President Claudia Sheinbaum previously mentioned, who assured a similar increase to inflation for autonomous educational institutions. In light of this situation, the university institution emphasizes the need for the necessary resources to ensure the educational quality it provides to thousands of students.
