Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Oaxaca

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was registered in the early morning of Saturday, March 28, 2026, in the southwest of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, at a depth of 5.8 kilometers, reported the National Seismological Service (SSN). The seismic event occurred at 06:57 and was not strong enough to activate the seismic alert in Mexico City or in other entities of the country. According to the SSN, during the early morning, several microearthquakes were reported in the same region, with magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 4.7. These events were recorded between 00:29 and 06:29, all with their epicenter in the municipality of Pinotepa Nacional.

"Seismic activity in southern Mexico continues to be closely monitored," authorities stated. "To date, there have been no reports of material damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake." However, they noted that permanent monitoring of seismic activity in the area, considered high-incidence due to its geographical location, remains in place. The strongest earthquake recorded so far in 2026 occurred on January 2 in San Marcos, Guerrero, with a magnitude of 6.5, and was felt in the central region of the country.

In light of the constant seismic activity in southern Mexico, authorities urged the population to stay informed through the official channels of the National Seismological Service and to follow the recommendations of Civil Protection to reduce risks in the event of possible seismic movements.
