Kidnapping of Actor Alejandro Sandí in Mexico

Mexican actor Alejandro Sandí and his friends were kidnapped on the Nevado de Toluca volcano. After 27 hours in captivity, they were released. The incident caused the actor post-traumatic stress and led to a rift in his friendship.

In the Mexican State of Mexico, on the Nevado de Toluca volcano, the kidnapping of renowned actor Alejandro Sandí occurred. He, along with his friends, actresses Vanessa Arias and Esmeralda Ugalde, went at dawn to enjoy the view. Around 8:00 AM, their vehicle was intercepted by a group of armed men. The actor tried to calm his companions amidst the chaos. When he attempted to get out of the car, one of the assailants pointed a gun at his head. He was transferred to another vehicle, handcuffed, blindfolded, and placed in the trunk. Sandí described this period as an agonizing confinement, with no clear sense of time and intensifying physical limitations. He was in the trunk with another victim, French citizen Frédéric Michel. After 27 hours of captivity, in an operation led by the National Anti-kidnapping Coordination (Conase) and the State of Mexico's Attorney General's Office, Alejandro Sandí and Frédéric Michel were released. Shortly after, Vanessa Arias and Esmeralda Ugalde reunited with the actor. The encounter was limited to a hug and tears, with no conversation about the kidnapping. However, the incident not only caused material losses but also left deep psychological scars. Sandí reported that the kidnapping led to post-traumatic stress. He began attending therapy multiple times a week but opted against antidepressants. Professionally, he distanced himself from acting for several years but returned in 2022 with a role in the series 'The Last King.' Furthermore, he faced a rift with Vanessa Arias. The actor explained this was due to the need to process the trauma individually. Both experienced fear and emotional exhaustion, leading them to distance themselves to prevent the memory of the attack from dominating their lives. Vanessa Arias also sought psychological help to overcome the incident, suffering from paranoia, insomnia, and nighttime panic attacks linked to the memory of being locked in the trunk.
