Uses and Risks of Dating Apps in Mexico

Dating apps in Mexico are on the rise, but they also bring risks of fraud and cyberbullying. The importance of digital education and caution when interacting online is increasing.

Uses and Risks of Dating Apps in Mexico

Currently, dating apps have become a popular way to meet new people; however, they also pose a risk in terms of online safety. Criminals can exploit these platforms to commit crimes such as cyberbullying, romance scams, identity theft, and the creation of fake profiles.

A survey conducted in 2023 showed that many users have experienced fake profiles and a lack of transparency in interactions when using dating apps, which can endanger those looking to establish relationships online. Among the most used apps in Mexico are Tinder, Bumble, and Grindr, according to a study from February 2023.

Regarding risks, none of these apps have a registered adhesion contract with Profeco, so it is advisable to read the terms and conditions carefully before making any transactions within the platforms.

To avoid fraud and risky situations, it is important to follow certain advice such as meeting in public places, not sharing personal or banking information with strangers, verifying profiles on other social networks, not sending money to unknown individuals, and reporting suspicious behavior to the respective platform.

Internet safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco) has warned about the increase in scams and fraud in dating apps, especially on dates like Valentine's Day celebrated on February 14.

In Mexico, with a high number of internet and cell phone users, access to social networks and dating apps is easy. Therefore, it is vital to follow safety recommendations when using these platforms to enjoy the experience safely and without risks.
