Mexico City Alerts New Phone Scam Impersonating Tax Authority

Mexico City's security alert warns of a sophisticated 'vishing' scam where criminals pose as tax officials to extract personal data or money through fear and urgency. Authorities urge vigilance.

Mexico City Alerts New Phone Scam Impersonating Tax Authority

The Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) of Mexico City has issued an alert to the population regarding a telephone fraud scheme where criminals impersonate the Tax Administration Service (SAT) to obtain personal information or make improper charges.

The warning was issued by the Cyber Police Unit, which detected the use of social engineering techniques to generate fear, confusion, and pressure. According to the SSC, scammers contact victims through unexpected calls, presenting themselves as public officials and using technical and formal language.

In these communications, they refer to supposed tax irregularities, debts, or inconsistencies in declarations, and warn of immediate legal consequences, such as asset seizures or fines, if a payment is not made or confidential data is not provided.

The agency explained that this practice corresponds to telephone phishing or "vishing," which has evolved with more sophisticated methods. To reinforce the deception, the perpetrators may send fraudulent emails, fake documents, or links to websites that mimic official ones, in order to lend credibility to the threat.

Among the most common characteristics of this fraud are:

  • Unexpected calls that generate fear or urgency.
  • Request for personal, tax, or banking information.
  • Threats of imminent legal consequences.
  • Request for urgent payments via transfers, deposits, or prepaid cards.
  • Use of falsified or official-looking phone numbers.

The SSC recommended not providing personal or banking information, not making payments through unofficial channels, and verifying any communication directly on the SAT's portal. In case of doubts or incidents, they urged citizens to contact the Cyber Police Unit at 55 5242 5100, extension 5086, or at policia.cibernetica@ssc.cdmx.gob.mx.
