Importance of Contraceptive Education in Mexico

Telefem highlights the need to ensure access to contraceptives and promote sexual education, given the high percentage of unplanned pregnancies among young people in Mexico.

Importance of Contraceptive Education in Mexico

The organization Telefem pointed out that there are still locations where women do not have the freedom to decide about their sexuality and where responsibility regarding sexual relationships is not assumed. To address this issue, Telefem, focused on medical counseling, highlights the need for public institutions to guarantee the supply of contraceptives and promote education about their use.

Telefem provides anonymous and confidential medical guidance through its website and WhatsApp, offering scientific information and resolving doubts about contraceptive methods for those who require it. Despite the widespread access to information and social networks, resistance to contraceptives remains a barrier in Mexico, especially among young people.

According to data from INEGI, more than 40% of pregnancies among young people aged 15 to 24 are unplanned, which affects reproductive health and social well-being. Factors such as lack of education, cultural barriers, limited access, and scarcity of supply contribute to this issue. Approximately 14.5% of young people believe that contraceptives go against their religious or cultural beliefs, while significant percentages are unaware of how they work or fear the side effects.

Additionally, lack of access to contraceptive methods affects 17.3% of young people in certain communities. The limited availability of long-acting methods, such as implants or intrauterine devices in the healthcare sector, further complicates access due to cost and distribution. Overcoming myths surrounding contraceptives and educating about sexually transmitted diseases present key challenges in addressing this issue.
