García Harfuch Aims for Improved U.S.-Mexico Coordination

The Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico, Omar García Harfuch, is working to strengthen coordination with U.S. security authorities. The aim is to improve border controls to combat the trafficking of weapons to Mexico, which end up in the hands of armed groups in the country.

García Harfuch seeks to take advantage of Donald Trump's restrictive policy and the designation of certain groups as "terrorists" to advance the dismantling of these groups' networks. Dialogue with American agencies has intensified to ensure effective coordination in the implementation of new policies.

Avoiding conflicts like those that occurred in Sinaloa after the capture of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada is one of the priorities, as they generate tensions in the Mexican government and fears of interventionism by the United States. Trump has been emphatic in his actions at the border, such as massive raids and the declaration of a migration crisis.

In this context, García Harfuch has accelerated his contacts with new U.S. security authorities, such as the future head of the DEA and the FBI director. Swarm Operations could gain more relevance in Mexican policy as part of this strategy.

Trump has announced severe measures against drug cartels, including the enforcement of the Foreign Enemies Act to expel criminal networks affecting the United States. Prominent government figures, such as Marco Rubio, have suggested the use of armed force as an option against organized crime.

In addition to addressing the issue of cartels, Trump has confirmed the implementation of stricter immigration policies, including the "national emergency" at the southern border and the reversal of the "Remain in Mexico" asylum program. The president has also expressed his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of the United States" and send troops to the border to stop the "invasion" of undocumented foreigners.
