The declaration of a state of emergency at the border between the United States and Mexico, as well as Donald Trump's order to declare Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations, has generated a 51% positive rating in social media conversations in Mexico, compared to 39% negative opinions. According to Andrea de Anda, director of the consulting firm Capisci, these measures seem to be liked by users in Mexico, who perceive that they could improve security in the country by containing violence.
In an analysis conducted by Capisci, it was found that Trump's possession took 7.1 million views on the channels that broadcasted it and more than three million interactions on social media, including participation from influencers, athletes, and artists. The main focus of the conversation in Mexico has been around Trump's inauguration, the attendees, and their actions, followed by the declaration of emergency at the border and the executive order against drug cartels.
Another topic that has gained relevance is Trump's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, which provoked a significant increase in digital interaction, mostly in a comedic tone. Despite the humorous aspect, the name change has generated outrage among the Mexican population, reflected in 80% negative comments on this topic.
Andrea de Anda emphasizes that the conversation about Trump in Mexico is mainly organic, with only 9% of inorganic interactions. The majority of Mexicans are actively participating, expressing indignation and annoyance at the measures of the American president. 53% of comments are negative, while only 39% are positive.
