The threat of tariffs from the United States is pushing Mexico to curb illegal migration towards that country and to effectively combat fentanyl trafficking and drug cartels. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that talks have begun between Mexico and the United States, led by Chancellor Juan Ramón de la Fuente and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sheinbaum described the first conversation as "very good and cordial," highlighting that Marco Rubio made the first call to Mexico.

Claudia Sheinbaum has emphasized that the relationship between Mexico and the United States will be good, while respecting the sovereignty of both countries. Following the favorable opinions expressed by Trump about Mexico in Davos, the Mexican president showed optimism and highlighted the U.S. president's vision regarding the use of tariffs. Trump mentioned the importance of Mexico's actions on issues such as migration, organized crime, and control of imports from China.

El Financiero columnist Enrique Quintana pointed out that communication between Mexico and the United States seems to flow through unexpected channels, which has generated Donald Trump's trust towards Mexico. Trump's presidency began five days ago, and although there have been threats of tariffs, there have also been positive statements about cooperation with Mexico.

Sheinbaum stated that designating the cartels as terrorists would not help, but she emphasized the importance of joint coordination. This coordination is one of the conditions imposed by Trump to avoid imposing tariffs on Mexico due to drug trafficking. The comprehensive strategy to combat organized crime and drug trafficking in Mexico seeks to promote collaboration and labor coordination.

Despite the positive signals, the columnist warns to take Trump's statements with caution due to the unpredictable nature of the president. For example, in Davos, he suggested that companies establish themselves in the United States to enjoy tax and energy benefits.
