The investigations began after a complaint was filed regarding the disappearance of three members of the López Acosta family from Culiacán, Sinaloa. Roel López Duarte, Laura Elena Acosta Pérez, and Jesús Manuel Serrano Avendaño disappeared during a trip to Tepic, Nayarit. The complaint was filed with the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Investigation of Missing Persons in Nayarit on January 9.

During the inquiries, authorities discovered a clandestine grave in Pescadero, municipality of Rosamorada, where three bodies were found that, with DNA evidence provided by their relatives, were identified as the missing individuals.

Four people allegedly involved in the homicide of the family were arrested in an operation in the area. It was noted that the vehicles used by the victims, a red Mazda CX-3 and a white Toyota Camry, had theft reports, suggesting a link to those responsible for the crime.

Before losing contact with their relatives, the victims requested 40,000 pesos in two payments for a supposed repair of their vehicle in the town of La Concha, Nayarit, where their communication was interrupted. The Attorney General's Office of Nayarit stated that investigations continue, as the modus operandi and circumstances of the case could be related to other crimes in the region.
