Urgent CELAC Meeting Called in Tegucigalpa

After Colombian President Gustavo Petro requested a meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), the President of Honduras and Pro Tempore President (PPT), Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, urgently called for a meeting of heads of state for Thursday, January 30. This extraordinary meeting of presidents will be scheduled in a hybrid format and will have the in-person participation of Petro in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

In this context, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo commented on the agreement reached between the governments of Colombia and the United States. During the People's Morning of this Monday, January 27, Sheinbaum expressed her satisfaction with the agreement achieved. Emphasizing the importance of dialogue, respect, and the defense of sovereignty and human rights, she indicated that she would closely follow the development of the Celac meeting to evaluate her participation, either personally or through the chancellor.

In this context, topics such as migration, the environment, and Latin American and Caribbean unity are highlighted on the Celac meeting agenda. The relationship between the United States and Colombia was affected after Petro denounced a "degrading treatment" of deported migrants during the previous administration and rejected the entry of U.S. military planes. In response, tariffs of 25% were imposed on Colombian products, marking a tension between both nations that the President of Colombia described as a "blockade" by the United States and announced similar reprisals in response.
