Claudia Sheinbaum on INM Transition Process

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reported that the former governor of Puebla, Sergio Céspedes Peregrina, will not yet assume his position at the National Migration Institute (INM) due to a long ongoing transition process, especially concerning the immigration issue with the United States. During the morning conference from the National Palace, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining continuity and coordination with the current team led by Francisco Garduño Yáñez, the acting head of the INM.

In this regard, Sheinbaum mentioned that migration is a delicate and essential matter in the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States, making it crucial to avoid any lack of coordination during this critical period. She also pointed out that the INM continues to work on several key fronts, such as the repatriation of nationals, the regularization of foreigners in Mexico, and the improvement of processes at airports for nationals and foreigners.

Regarding the INM, an internal analysis is currently underway to optimize its operations, including the management of the relationship with the United States, a central issue in the national migration agenda. Last October, Sheinbaum announced that Sergio Céspedes would be appointed as the head of the INM after completing his term as governor of Puebla in November, which has generated various speculations regarding his integration into the federal cabinet.

The possible entry of Céspedes into the INM occurs in a context filled with challenges, marked by statements from U.S. President Donald Trump about tariffs on Mexico, his proposal to designate cartels as terrorist groups, territorial disputes, and the recent deportation of Mexican migrants.
