Fears of Reelection in the Morena Party

In Mexico, fears are rising regarding the possible prohibition of reelections starting in 2027 proposed by the Morena leadership. President Claudia Sheinbaum will send projects to the Legislature in February, raising concerns among those aspiring for a second term.

Fears of Reelection in the Morena Party

Within the ruling party, concern has increased in recent weeks due to the possibility that national leadership may seek to prohibit re-elections starting in 2027, before the conclusion of a six-year term. The head of state announced that she would send both bills to the Legislative Power in February.

This situation is particularly concerning for those aspiring to a second term, already thinking about the elections for the next six-year term. The scenario becomes relevant when considering that in 2027 more than half of the governorships will be elected, and several figures are seeking positions of power in anticipation of the 2030 elections.

In the upcoming legislative period, which begins in February, there will be progress on a law to prohibit re-elections starting in 2030. However, there are suspicions within the party that internal re-elections may be banned starting in 2027, which could affect various figures.

This initiative is seen as a possible hindrance to political careers, and there are no clear definitions about it in the 4T. It is expected to see how events unfold in the Legislative Power to better clarify the landscape. President Claudia Sheinbaum has promised reforms against nepotism, and this movement could serve as an example for the citizenry and other parties.

At the moment, there are no confirmed dates, but the laws are expected to be approved considering the majorities of the 4T. Some leaders have already expressed their opinions on the matter, such as Gerardo Fernández Noroña, who has spoken out against the prohibition of re-election at least in the legislative sphere.
