The Senate Directive Board will carry out the public lottery of candidates for the positions of judges, ministers, and magistrates in the session hall next Friday as ordered by the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Power. Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the directive board, confirmed that the process must be completed before January 31, according to the notification received on Monday.
The senator highlighted that the list of registered candidates in the Evaluation Committee of the Federal Judicial Power will be shared, along with those improperly excluded by the tribunal and who will now participate in the lottery based on specialty. The procedure, which will be public and continuous, will be broadcast by the Congress Channel with the presence of a public notary and media outlets.
Once the lottery is conducted, the list of generated triads and pairs will be sent to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation for consideration. If the Court does not approve the proposals or does not process them before February 4, a fictitious approval will apply as determined by the Electoral Tribunal. In this case, the selected candidacies could be sent to the National Electoral Institute.
Fernández Noroña emphasized that the process must conclude before midnight on January 31 and no recess will be allowed. The Directive Board will evaluate whether it is necessary to change the date to Thursday, but they intend to carry out the lottery on Friday at noon in the Plenary of the Senate Chamber.
According to the document sent to the Senate by the tribunal, political parties do not participate in the constitutional election of positions in the Federal Judicial Power, as it is the responsibility of the Union Powers to protect the public interest and ensure the integrity of the electoral process for the election of judges.
