The Government of Mexico has questioned the veracity of a shooting reported at the border with the United States by Fox News. According to this information, a Mexican criminal group allegedly attacked U.S. Border Patrol while they were assisting irregular migrants in Texas.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, has indicated that it is necessary to investigate who carried out the shots and also the movements of the migrants, as these are two distinct situations. Although the news was disseminated on Monday, Gertz Manero clarifies that the events took place the previous week and that the Mexican Government is awaiting the report requested from the United States.
In this context, the request from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to the Secretariat of Foreign Relations to request information from Washington through diplomatic channels is highlighted. Additionally, the Mexican Government has initiated a formal process to investigate whether there are criminal activities associated with the case.
Gertz Manero emphasized the importance of not jumping to provide answers before receiving official information. The relevance of acting responsibly in response to these types of events is underscored, as requested by President Sheinbaum.
These events occur in a political context marked by the recent inauguration of Donald Trump, who has announced his intention to deport migrants en masse. In Mexico, there is concern over these deportations, given that Mexicans make up nearly half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and the remittances they send constitute a significant percentage of Mexico's gross domestic product.
