The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that she does not believe the threat of imposing tariffs by the United States will materialize in February, despite the White House's reiteration of maintaining this measure. Sheinbaum mentioned that there are conversations and dialogue that make the imposition of tariffs unlikely in the short term.
In a conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum affirmed that if tariffs were to be applied, Mexico is already prepared with a plan. However, she pointed out that it is not the right time to reveal this plan and believes it is necessary to understand the reasons behind the possible imposition of tariffs.
Sheinbaum ruled out that the region is facing a division or distancing, reaffirming the importance of unity in Latin America and the Caribbean. She emphasized the need to maintain trade partnerships in the region and mentioned that the Mexican Foreign Minister will communicate with his Honduran counterpart to clarify the reasons behind the suspension of an urgent meeting called by CELAC.
