Sheinbaum Addresses Suspension of Celac Meeting

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum dismisses concerns over a regional rift following the cancellation of a Celac emergency meeting. She emphasizes Mexico's commitment to unity in Latin America despite trade relations with the U.S.

Sheinbaum Addresses Suspension of Celac Meeting

President Claudia Sheinbaum ruled out a possible rupture in the region after the emergency meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) called by the pro tempore president of the organization, Xiomara Castro from Honduras, was canceled. During her press conference, Sheinbaum mentioned that "No (there is no rupture). We need to see what the decision is, why this Celac meeting was suspended, it was postponed."

The response from the Mexican leader came after Honduras confirmed the suspension of the Celac summit called by Castro to discuss issues related to migration, the environment, and regional unity. Sheinbaum stated that Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente would communicate with his Honduran counterpart to clarify the reasons behind the cancellation, which she herself had announced she would not attend.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico's position towards Latin America will always be unity, despite trade relations with the United States. The summit, which was scheduled to discuss migration and advance regional dialogue to build collective strategies, was suspended in a "hybrid format."

The emergency meeting had been called after a misunderstanding between the United States and Colombia over Colombian President Gustavo Petro's decision not to allow the entry of two planes with deportees from the U.S. This situation led to the imposition of 25% tariffs on Colombian products by Donald Trump, who threatened to raise them to 50%. However, the White House declared the crisis with Colombia closed, stating that the government in Bogotá had accepted "all the terms of President Trump" regarding the repatriation of immigrants.
