Following the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on Mexico by the President of the United States and Claudia Sheinbaum's response to Donald Trump, leaders from Morena and PRI spoke out about it. Ricardo Monreal, Alejandro 'Alito' Moreno, and the PT caucus were the first to react to the measure, which will take effect on February 4.
Monreal, leader of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, described Trump's decision as a "brutal attack" on Mexican exports to the United States. He expressed his concern, pointing out that the country had never before been subjected to such aggression and harassment, calling for national unity to face this situation. Monreal emphasized the importance of repudiating this aggression and maintaining the spirit to overcome adversities alongside Claudia Sheinbaum.
For his part, Alejandro 'Alito' Moreno, national leader of the PRI, blamed Morena for the tariffs imposed on Mexico, arguing that negligence in fighting organized crime and immigration policies were the causes of Trump's decision. However, Moreno stated that the PRI would not support the imposition of tariffs as a mechanism of pressure, criticizing the lack of historical understanding and strategy in the bilateral relationship with the United States on the part of the Government.
Lilia Aguilar, deputy coordinator of the PT, rejected the increase of tariffs on Mexico and supported Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasizing the impossibility of changing Trump’s "bullying" style. She stressed the need to diversify trade with other nations and design strategies to protect domestic producers. Aguilar warned that Trump's measure will impact the exchange rate and inflation in Mexico but will affect the United States even more in the price of final products.
Aguilar pointed out that Mexico must prepare to face the consequences of the tariff measure by diversifying markets and having contingency plans. She highlighted that Trump seeks to create a migration crisis to stay in power, using Mexicans as scapegoats.
