President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the implementation of the 25% tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump will be put on hold for one month, following an agreement reached in a phone conversation held on Monday morning. During the call, which lasted at least three quarters of an hour, topics such as arms trafficking, migration, and trade were discussed.
In her statements, Sheinbaum highlighted that the United States committed to work on issues related to arms trafficking to Mexico. She also mentioned that she emphasized to President Trump the importance of the prevention campaign against the use of fentanyl and other drugs, in addition to pointing out the seriousness of the illegal entry of high-powered firearms from the United States that arm criminal groups in Mexico.
Regarding migration, the president detailed that advancements in the area were discussed, emphasizing that the negotiations focused on respecting human rights and the mutual interest in reducing the trafficking of fentanyl and other drugs. Another agreed point was the deployment of more National Guard agents to the northern border, for which coordination has already taken place with General Hernán Cortés Hernández.
Sheinbaum described the conversation as positive and the agreements as good, noting that although a physical meeting with President Trump is not yet scheduled, telephone communications will be maintained. The president thanked the support of business sectors as well as the Chambers of Deputies and Senators for backing the Mexican government's dialogue initiatives with U.S. authorities.
