Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she will reinforce the border between Mexico and the United States with 10,000 members of the National Guard as part of an agreement reached with U.S. President Donald Trump after the threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican products. Sheinbaum emphasized that this pact was achieved following a phone conversation of more than an hour with Trump, in a framework of respect and good relations between both countries.
In a conference from the National Palace, Sheinbaum reported on the agreements reached with Trump. In addition to reinforcing the border, it was agreed that the United States will work to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons into Mexico. Furthermore, the governments of Mexico and the U.S. will begin to collaborate on security and trade issues immediately.
The decision to impose tariffs was motivated by the trade deficit, irregular migration, and fentanyl trafficking. However, following the conversation between Sheinbaum and Trump, a one-month pause in the implementation of tariffs was agreed upon as part of the agreements reached.
Sheinbaum commented that she was the one who proposed the idea of pausing the tariffs during the call with Trump. She stated that this agreement benefits both countries and strengthens security at Mexico's northern border. The president celebrated the outcome of the conversation and the positive impact it will have on the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.
