President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday, February 3, the pause of tariffs on Mexico during a call with Donald Trump. In this agreement, Mexico committed to strengthening measures against the trafficking of fentanyl and other drugs. As a result, it was agreed that Mexico will send 10,000 elements of the National Guard to the border with the United States to prevent drug trafficking, especially of fentanyl. For its part, the United States will work to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons into Mexico.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio committed in a call with his Mexican counterpart, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to collaborate as neighbors and partners. During the conversation, they discussed measures to secure the border between both countries, dismantle transnational criminal organizations, and stop illegal migration, as well as the flow of fentanyl and chemical precursors from China.
Rubio expressed his gratitude for the sending of soldiers by Mexico and emphasized the importance of direct dialogue and respect for sovereignty. The pause in tariffs was achieved after a month following the agreements between Donald Trump and Claudia Sheinbaum.
