The Chamber of Deputies approved with 321 votes in favor, 112 against, and one abstention the list of 1,412 candidates for positions in the Federal Judiciary (PJF). This list, prepared by the Legislative Evaluation Committee, will be used in the judicial election on June 1, where positions for ministers of the Supreme Court (SCJN), magistrates, and judges across the country, among others, will be voted on.
The selection process included a public drawing of the candidates evaluated by the committee, which, according to Deputy Leonel Godoy from Morena, ensured transparency. However, the National Action Party (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) criticized the selection, claiming that it favors individuals related to President Claudia Sheinbaum's party and aims to capture the Judiciary.
The approved list includes 657 women and 755 men candidates for positions such as ministers of the SCJN, magistrates of the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal, magistrates of the TEPJF and its regional chambers, circuit magistrates, and district judges. The only abstention in the voting came from retired minister Olga Sánchez Cordero, whose daughter is a candidate for minister of the Supreme Court.
After the approval, the list will be sent to the Senate to continue the process of registering candidates with the National Electoral Institute (INE), although the latter has requested a postponement in its organization due to a budget readjustment. These elections are part of a judicial reform to change the way judges and magistrates are elected in Mexico, allowing their selection by popular vote and generating debates about judicial independence and political influence in the justice system.
