Controversial Initiative Leads to Political Fallout

The controversial delegated collection initiative aimed at garnishing workers’ wages for personal loans met massive backlash, leading to the dismissal of Cuauhtémoc Ochoa Fernández. His management of Infonavit funds and links to corruption are under scrutiny, impacting workers' rights.

Controversial Initiative Leads to Political Fallout

The calls to conduct audits and clarify responsibilities regarding the damages caused by the management of Infonavit funds and the lawsuits against it have generated controversy. One of the most controversial initiatives has been the so-called "delegated collection." The idea behind this proposal was to allow payments on loans associated with payroll to be deducted directly from employees' salaries by their employers.

This concept generated strong rejection, being considered detrimental to labor rights and a potential vehicle for financial abuses. One of the proponents of this measure, Cuauhtémoc Ochoa Fernández, was dismissed from his position in the Senate's Finance Commission for trying to promote this initiative. The dismissal adds to a series of controversies in his political history, including omissions in his asset declaration and accusations of corruption.

According to the director of Economic Analysis at Grupo Financiero BASE, Gabriela Siller Pagaza, the implementation of delegated collection would entail an increase in administrative costs for companies, which would be forced to handle the collection of loans. This change would have an impact not only on workers but also on companies.

During his tenure, Ochoa Fernández was involved in approving reforms in Infonavit that benefited law firms to the detriment of beneficiaries. These modifications led to a series of lawsuits that resulted in the loss of homes for many families, as well as a misappropriation of 29 billion pesos.

Journalistic investigations have revealed that, in addition to his actions in the Finance Commission, Ochoa Fernández did not report overseas properties valued in millions of dollars. His political history has been marked by frequent changes of affiliation and accusations of opportunism, which have raised doubts about his performance as a public official and undermined his credibility. Although his dismissal has been presented as a relocation, the consequences of his decisions still impact thousands of workers who suffered the loss of their assets.
