On Tuesday, February 18, the affiliation and re-affiliation process for senators to Morena took place in the Upper Chamber. The event was led by Luisa María Alcalde, party president, and Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, Secretary of Organization. Prior to the start of the day, Morena leaders held a private meeting with the senators of the caucus.
In this meeting, the presences of Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez, Alejandro Murat, and Waldo Fernández were highlighted, the latter being a former member of the Green Party. The affiliation module was established in the offices of the Morena caucus, located in the Patio del Federalismo on the first floor of the Senate headquarters.
Of the 61 senators that make up the Morena parliamentary group, the majority affiliated or reaffirmed their membership during the process. Among the participating legislators were Gerardo Fernández Noroña, a former member of the PRD and PT, and Alfonso Cepeda, leader of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE). Legislators from other political forces such as Alejandro Murat and Cinthia López Castro also joined.
On his social media, Gerardo Fernández Noroña shared the credential that proves him as an official member of Morena. In a message he wrote: "This is how things are. I, happy Feliciano."
During the process, Luisa María Alcalde and Andrés Manuel López Beltrán arrived at the Senate in luxury vans, contrasting with the discourse of republican austerity promoted by Morena. They were subsequently received by the parliamentary security staff and transferred to the offices of the parliamentary group, and then to the Octavio Paz auditorium. Despite being an event of great media interest, none of the Morena leaders made statements to the press.
