The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, spoke at a morning conference at the National Palace amidst accusations that Mexico is governed by drug trafficking, made by the president of the United States, Donald Trump. Sheinbaum stated: 'And they will not undermine us because the government and the people of Mexico are one.'
Sheinbaum explained that drone flights over Mexico are part of the collaboration established many years ago between the Mexican government and that of the United States, emphasizing that they are always conducted at the request of the Mexican government. She stressed that there is nothing illegal in this coordination and questioned the appearance of this information in the New York Times, indicating that it is an aggressive campaign by the Trump government to search for fentanyl laboratories.
The president rejected suggestions that her government accepted this intrusion as part of negotiations with the United States, which would imply a violation of national sovereignty. In response to the criticism, Sheinbaum asserted that they will not weaken Mexico, highlighting the importance of sovereignty as a fundamental principle.
Sheinbaum defended that there is nothing illegal in the drone flights and accused certain media outlets of attempting to weaken her government by insinuating that it has ceded to U.S. surveillance. The president reiterated the transparency of her administration and her commitment to the truth, denouncing any attempt to undermine Mexican sovereignty.
Amid discussions on security that will take place between both governments, Sheinbaum emphasized that any collaboration with the United States is framed within agreements from previous years and firmly rejected accusations of weakness in the face of alleged foreign pressures.
