Conanp Rejects Second Rompepicos Project

The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas in Mexico has rejected the Second Rompepicos project in La Huasteca Park due to potential violations of environmental laws, sparking concerns over other pending infrastructure projects.

Conanp Rejects Second Rompepicos Project

The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) rejected the project for the second Rompepicos Dam in La Huasteca Park. This decision, from Semarnat, is based on the violation of Article 14 of the decree of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, which prohibits various activities, including the construction of infrastructure and communication paths within the park. The rejection by Conanp is part of a review process by the federation, with the request being in the hands of Semarnat since January 2024. The General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk of Semarnat still has to make a decision on this matter.

In Palacio de Cantera, there are fears that these complications will extend to other major projects. There is concern within the governor's circle about works that are also awaiting permits from the environmental agency, such as the Interserrana Highway in the section of the Rayones Sierra. According to LPO, this project faces obstacles mainly in terms of investment and progress, due to the lack of permits from Semarnat.

The "Rompepicos II" project was previously announced by Santa Catarina's mayor, Jesús Nava, when he was still with MC. However, to date, operations in the area have not been possible, even after the damage caused by Hurricane Alberto.
