Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada's lawyer, Juan Manuel Delgado, confirmed that they will continue to wait for a written response to their request, after Claudia Sheinbaum's government asked the United States for the extradition of the drug trafficker instead of the repatriation that the defense had proposed.
Delgado expressed that he disagrees with the request of Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero, who has requested Zambada GarcĂa's extradition on four occasions instead of his repatriation. He clarified that extradition and repatriation procedures are different and can coexist in parallel.
Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada's defense emphasized that they request the repatriation of the accused along with guarantees that the death penalty will not be imposed. Despite the Mexican government seeking extradition so he can face justice in Mexico, the defense insists on the repatriation of the accused.
Juan Manuel Delgado revealed that they recently learned of the extradition requests made by the Mexican government, as they were unaware of this information. He highlighted the importance of differentiating between extradition and repatriation in Zambada's case.
According to Delgado, while extradition means a person is transferred to another country to face trial, repatriation is a humanitarian procedure that allows a national to return to their country under exceptional circumstances. The lawyer argued that repatriation is a human and humanitarian right that must be considered in this case.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the statements by Zambada's defense, asserting that the extradition request is clear and that the government is fighting organized crime within the legal framework. Meanwhile, Zambada's lawyer insisted that his client has the right to be repatriated due to the extraordinary humanitarian circumstances surrounding his case.
