The General Council of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) approved the publication of the lists of the 719 candidacies for the positions to be decided by popular vote in the first judicial election in the history of Mexico. This approval included the recommendation to the Congress of Mexico City to rectify the inconsistencies and present the missing documentation of the nominated candidacies.
In a second urgent session of the extraordinary local electoral process of the Judiciary 2024-2025, it was determined to publish the lists so that citizens and interested parties can be informed. It was confirmed that out of the 833 candidacies submitted, 12 were declared deserted and the total number of candidates nominated by the three powers was 821. After discarding the repeated candidacies, the final total was 719 nominated candidacies.
For this electoral process, a total of 138 positions will be elected, distributed among magistracies of the Justice Tribunal of Mexico City, courts in Mexico City, and magistracies of the Judicial Discipline Tribunal of Mexico City.
On another topic, the feasibility of implementing early voting modalities for citizens residing abroad and in preventive detention in this electoral process was determined to be unviable. The determination of unfeasibility was based on insurmountable obstacles related to the lack of a nominal list of residents abroad and the operational implications for developing the Electronic Internet Voting System (SEI) for voting.
Despite the technical, financial, and timing challenges posed by this extraordinary election, the IECM committed to working on the adjustment of normative models for future electoral processes and making early voting modalities viable.
