A group of 36 U.S. congressmen has sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to take action against Mexico regarding a conflict between the Mexican government and Vulcan Materials Company. According to the letter, Calica, a subsidiary of Vulcan, has been subjected to unfair treatment by Mexican authorities.
The issue between the mining company specializing in limestone extraction and the Mexican government began in 2022, when President López Obrador ordered military forces to invade Vulcan's facilities and close Calica's operations in Quintana Roo. Subsequently, López Obrador expropriated Vulcan's property by designating it as a protected natural area, disrupting infrastructure project construction and jeopardizing jobs in the United States.
The congressmen also expressed concern about the presence of individuals associated with the Chinese Communist Party near Calica's facilities in the Yucatán Peninsula. They requested President Trump to establish ongoing surveillance in the area due to these intelligence reports.
Furthermore, the letter asks President Trump to demand that Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum resolve the issue in favor of Vulcan Materials Company to reverse the illegal actions taken during the previous administration. The U.S. congressmen expressed their willingness to support Trump’s efforts to protect American companies and hold Mexico accountable for its unfair treatment of Calica.
