After the discovery of a training and extermination camp controlled by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) by the group Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, journalist Ioan Grillo revealed a list of massacres and clandestine graves over the last 15 years. According to the journalist, paramilitary squads from various cartels have been responsible for perpetrating massacres and burying bodies in Mexico.
"The extermination camp in Teuchitlán, Jalisco, is a true tragedy, but tragically, it is not new. Since 2010, paramilitary squads from cartels and, at times, security forces have been perpetrating massacres and digging mass graves in Mexico," Grillo wrote.
The list includes organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Guerreros Unidos, Los Zetas, and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which have been involved in massacres in recent years. Among the highlighted events is the killing of 72 migrants in San Fernando, Tamaulipas in 2010, as well as the discovery of clandestine graves controlled by the CJNG between 2016 and 2023.
Another relevant event was the discovery of 383 corpses in Durango in 2010. Additionally, between 2013 and 2014, 74 bodies were exhumed in La Barca, Jalisco, presumed victims of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. In 2011, a fire at the Casino Royale in Monterrey resulted in the death of 52 people, orchestrated by Los Zetas.
Recently, a local group discovered an alleged clandestine crematorium in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, with features similar to that of Teuchitlán. Human remains were found, along with personal belongings and signs of extreme violence. Furthermore, the discovery of 298 skulls in Veracruz and the unearthing of 113 bodies in El Salto, Jalisco were highlighted.
Finally, in September 2014, the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students was attributed to Guerreros Unidos. Search efforts in this case involved various authorities and groups of families of the disappeared.
