The President of the United States, Donald Trump, commented in an interview that Mexico is concerned about the presence of drug cartels, which he claims control large areas of the country. He assured that his administration collaborates closely with the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, whom he praised for her kindness and with whom he stated he has a good relationship. Trump mentioned that the insecurity generated by the cartels is a serious problem affecting the governance of Mexico.
During the interview with journalist Rachel Campos Duffy from Fox News, Trump confirmed that at least 40% of Mexican territory is under the control of the cartels. He expressed the need for a president who is firm in their decisions regarding border security and the delineation of territories controlled by criminal groups. In this context, the U.S. government announced the donation of 45,000 hectares of federal land to the Mexican Army to prevent undocumented immigration.
Trump also suggested the possibility of offering money and plane tickets to undocumented migrants to leave the country, and in case they decide to return legally, the U.S. government would be willing to collaborate with them. He pointed out that drug cartels have seen their income reduced due to increased security at the common border, which has impacted their fortunes. Trump emphasized that, in his opinion, the border between the United States and Mexico is experiencing a high level of security without the need for additional legislation.
