Elections and Judicial Candidate Eligibility in Mexico

The president of the INE, Guadalupe Taddei, pointed out that in the judicial election on June 1, which calls for 99.7 million voters, 3,422 citizens will compete for 881 positions in various judicial instances. Campaigns are underway and will last until May 28, but alerts have been raised about possible interference from the Executive and organized crime in the elections and justice.

In this context, the president of the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, has acknowledged that some lists of candidates for judges presented contain names of people who have defended drug traffickers. He proposed to withdraw those candidacies that do not meet the requirement of constitutional integrity before the election.

Taddei explained that it will be the responsibility of the Senate and the TEPJF, not the INE, to determine if any candidate does not meet the eligibility requirements, including integrity. The Senate is expected to thoroughly review the profiles of the candidates, and they will be provided with a list of criminal backgrounds if they exist.

The president of the INE emphasized the importance of applying the norm correctly and objectively, beyond individual preferences. She added that the reform clearly establishes the requirements to be met for candidates, including the integrity of individuals. The final approval of the profiles of the candidates is pending, including the verification of possible criminal sentences.
