Ernesto Zedillo has expressed his concern about the judicial elections on June 1 in Mexico. In an essay for the magazine Letras Libres, the former Mexican president stated that Claudia Sheinbaum's government has manipulated the selection of candidates, who lack the necessary qualifications to administer justice.
Zedillo strongly criticized the judicial reform instituted by the Morena party, stating that it undermines democracy by eliminating institutional checks and balances and facilitating executive control over the judiciary, the armed forces, and elections. According to Zedillo, these actions have created an authoritarian state in Mexico, where the government has absolute control over the Constitution and fundamental rights.
The former president noted that the government's accumulation of power has been accompanied by reforms that do not improve the state's ability to seek and deliver justice. Zedillo highlighted that recent actions compromise freedom of expression, transparency, and accountability in the country, while weakening the opposition and political plurality.
In his strongest words to date, Zedillo stated that "our young democracy has been murdered." He warned about the severe erosion of democratic principles in Mexico and the danger it poses to the democratic structure of the country. The former president also criticized Sheinbaum's claim that Mexico is about to become the most democratic country in the world, calling it a lie to all Mexicans.
