New Fiscal Appointment in the CDMX Congress

The Congress of Mexico City appoints José Gerardo Huerta Alcalá as anti-corruption prosecutor and Daniel Osorio as electoral prosecutor, amid political tensions.

New Fiscal Appointment in the CDMX Congress

The recent tensions between the government and the opposition due to controversies over wiretaps in the subway dissipated during the local Congress session on Tuesday. All factions agreed to appoint José Gerardo Huerta Alcalá as the specialized prosecutor for combating corruption and Daniel Osorio Roque for the agency in charge of electoral crimes.

The selection process for José Huerta and Daniel Osorio was marked by internal conflicts among different sectors of Morena that aspired to hold these positions. Despite the disputes, the selected candidates maintain closeness with the previous authorities of the Attorney General's Office, Ernestina Godoy and Ulises Lara, who retained some influence despite the change in leadership led by Bertha Alcalde.

The favorable votes from the parliamentary groups of PRI, PAN, and Movimiento Ciudadano surprised many in the Donceles Palace, given their history of criticism towards the Public Prosecutor's Office in the past. Specifically, the support from PAN, a party critical of the previous management of Godoy, Lara, and Alcalde, was notable, as it voted against the appointment of the new prosecutor.

With this selection, the government begins to define the structure of the new Attorney General's Office led by Bertha Alcalde. The head of government, Clara Brugada, has led a political agreement to carry out these appointments with the aim of avoiding criticism from the opposition and reducing tensions that may arise during the upcoming electoral period.
