CICSA Denies Responsibility in Metro Line 12 Collapse

The company Carso Infrastructure and Construction and Affiliates (CICSA), belonging to Grupo Carso, rejected any responsibility for the collapse of an elevated section of Line 12 of the Metro that occurred on May 3, 2021. According to CICSA, the company did not participate in the design of the work nor was it responsible for its maintenance. To date, there is no authority resolution holding it responsible for construction failures in that section.

In relation to recent lawsuits from 12 victims who have won a legal protection to reassess the compensations offered by Grupo Carso, CICSA emphasized that its participation in the compensation processes was voluntary, supportive, and coordinated with the competent authorities. More than 95% of the affected individuals accepted the scheme proposed by the company, even though the case remains open and is being analyzed by the Judicial Power of Mexico City.

The company reiterated that it complied with all legal and ethical requirements following the tragedy, and will continue to collaborate in accordance with the law in everything related to the incident. For its part, in response to new requests from victims of the Line 12 Metro collapse for new compensation and direct allegations, CICSA stated that the collapsed section was built according to high-quality standards both nationally and internationally and had the endorsement of recognized engineering firms.

CICSA asserts that the Government of Mexico City received the work completely satisfied and with a detailed maintenance manual that included inspection protocols, especially after significant seismic events. However, it is evident that despite at least 14 considerable magnitude earthquakes occurring between the delivery of the line and the collapse, the scheduled maintenance was not carried out.

In the company's words: 'As various expert studies establish, the main cause of the regrettable events of May 3, 2021, was the design of the work and the lack of maintenance.'
