On Wednesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum's meeting with governors from the Morena and Verde parties was marked by tense moments. The governors, who were summoned to discuss health coverage, in fact received a presidential reprimand regarding issues of medicine supply, security, and financial management in their states. The president dominated the meeting, which lasted a little over an hour, and almost no one present had the opportunity to speak. Attendees were reminded that many of them were elected thanks to the votes Sheinbaum received in the 2024 presidential election. They were also asked to counter opposition speeches and more vigorously defend the movement. The rest of the governors quickly distanced themselves from the Zócalo area. There was a direct reference to the opposition's efforts on social media, which is not being contained by state executives. This issue is closely linked to the impact observed at the Palace of the 'Generation Z' collective's calls. As in previous meetings, Sheinbaum reminded governors of the need to focus on security issues and assured that she knows of cases where state heads do not attend meetings with their federal and military counterparts. The presidential message contained a constant that has been reiterated for over a month: the conviction that it is the head of state who bears all the brunt of public opinion, while governors and mayors remain silent or, in the worst-case scenario, become complicit with the opposition. Some concerning figures were also mentioned, which begin to signal a decline in the Morena brand in various entities—a shift in electoral behavior that usually benefits candidates from the 4T. A constant throughout the previous six-year term that is now beginning to be questioned. Another detail: in the government, the thesis is strong that governors need to control the mayors in their states more because it is at the municipal level where the brand is being punished the most by poor management. Ultimately, the meeting left a bad taste, which is why the only governor who came out to comment on trivial and superficial issues was Julio Menchaca.
