Mexico: Delgado on Teacher Protests and Producer Blockades

Mexico's Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, mentioned in recent hours to his associates that he has managed to contain the mobilizations of teachers from the CNTE at least until the month of February, a key movement in a country shaken by marches and road blockades. For Delgado, it was crucial to agree with the teachers, who had even threatened to boycott projects related to the upcoming World Cup. However, the head of the SEP believes it will be more difficult to stop the blockades by producers, especially because granting the guaranteed prices they demand would set a complex precedent for the incomes of different economic sectors going forward. Delgado believes the blockades are a consequence of a government with little political operation, an expected accusation because he wanted to be Secretary of the Interior but was ultimately vetoed due to his ties to individuals linked to the fuel theft scheme. He understands that the chaos of the blockades is due to the Executive's inability to align sectors of its own ruling party as well as external actors who, in various cases, are outside the law and, in others, could even have unconfessable ties. He is also not too convinced of the mobilization called by the ruling party for the first days of December. He believes filling the Zócalo is a resource that is being abused and lists the number of calls the president made in her first year.
