Mexico's AG appoints successor

In one of his last acts as Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero appointed Ernestina Godoy as the head of the Specialized Office for Competitive Control. Under the FGR Law, this is the second most important position within the autonomous body, and its holder is the one who replaces the Attorney General in case of absence. Thus, Godoy will be the head of the prosecutor's office while a new head is chosen. She replaces Germán Adolfo Castillo Banuet, a man of complete trust for Gertz Manero. FGR Law, Article 21: The person holding the position of Attorney General will be replaced in case of excuses, absences, or temporary failures by the person holding the position of the Specialized Office for Competitive Control, in the terms established by the Organic Statute, who must meet the requirements to be the person holding the position of Attorney General. In case of definitive absence, the position of Attorney General will be temporarily held by the person in charge of the Specialized Office for Competitive Control. This Thursday, Alejandro Gertz Manero presented his resignation from the position of Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) to the president of the Senate, Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, after almost seven years in the position. In a letter addressed to Castillo Juárez, Gertz stated that he is leaving the leadership of the FGR after accepting an invitation from President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to be an ambassador in a 'friendly country'. 'I am making it known to you that the Head of the Federal Executive Branch, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has proposed me as Ambassador of Mexico to a friendly country, which is currently under consideration'. The lawyer will also have the opportunity to run for the position on a permanent basis. With this appointment, Ernestina Godoy will have to leave the position of Legal Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.
