Mexico's Attorney General Resigns to Be Appointed Ambassador

Alejandro Gertz Manero, the Attorney General of the Republic, has resigned after being proposed for the position of Ambassador. In a letter sent to the President of the Senate, Laura Itzel Castillo, he stated that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has proposed him as Ambassador of Mexico to a friendly country, a process currently being formalized. Gertz Manero specified that his resignation as Attorney General of the Republic is effective immediately with all corresponding legal consequences. The Senate now needs to appoint a new head for the Attorney General's Office. According to information from the MORENA parliamentary group, the frontrunner for the position is Ernestina Godoy Ramos, the current Legal Counselor to the Presidency. Before resigning, Gertz Manero signed an order dismissing Cristina Reséndiz Durriti as head of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Competition Control (FECOC) and appointed Ernestina Godoy in her place. This will allow Godoy to serve as the interim Attorney General until a new head is confirmed by the Senate. "This proposal will allow me to continue serving my country in a new task that honors me and for which I am grateful, reaffirming my vocation for public service throughout my career," Gertz Manero stated. The next step is for the full Senate to vote on a shortlist of candidates proposed by President Sheinbaum, after the Senate has compiled a list of at least 10 nominees.
