Senate of Mexico approves list of candidates for Attorney General

The head of the Senate's Political Coordination Board, Adán Augusto López Hernández, announced that the new Attorney General of the Republic could be appointed on Wednesday. The Senate approved a list of 10 candidates to be sent to President Claudia Sheinbaum for final consideration.

The head of the Senate's Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), Adán Augusto López Hernández, indicated that on Wednesday they could designate the person for the position of Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), a process that will conclude with the taking of office.

López Hernández expressed his confidence that after sending the list of 10 profiles, endorsed by the Senate, to the President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the head of the Federal Executive Branch will return her proposal with a list of candidates on Wednesday, so they can appear before the Senate.

Therefore, he said, it is possible that the procedure will be completed on the very same day, in a day that is expected to be long but will end with the inauguration of the elected person.

López Hernández mentioned that a change was made to the initial list, as one of the individuals was disqualified because they served as a magistrate and did not meet the deadline to leave their post.

By a qualified majority - 88 votes in favor, 28 against, and five abstentions - the plenary session of the Senate of the Republic approved the list with 10 people aspiring to the position of head of the FGR, which will be sent to the head of the Federal Executive Branch.

The list is composed of: Luz María Zarza Delgado Maribel Bojorges Beltrán Sandra Luz González Mogollón Ernestina Godoy Ramos Mirna Lucía Grande Hernández Luis Manuel Pérez de Acha Félix Roel Herrera Antonio Hamlet García Almaguer David Borja Padilla Miguel Nava Alvarado.

Upon receiving the list that the head of the Federal Executive Branch sends to the Senate, after the appearances of the individuals who make it up, in order to guarantee their right to be heard, the Attorney General of the Republic will be appointed by a two-thirds vote of the members present.
