Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Tuesday that it is impossible to meet the United States' water delivery demand under the conditions set by Donald Trump the day before. However, she informed that they will seek an agreement to fulfill the commitments established in the 1944 Water Treaty.
From the start of her morning press conference, the president mentioned the threat from the U.S. leader to raise tariffs by 5% if 246 million cubic meters of water from the Rio Grande basin are not delivered to Texas farmers by the end of the year.
In this regard, Sheinbaum announced that at 2:00 PM today, a meeting will be held remotely between the heads of Foreign Relations, Conagua (National Water Commission), and Agriculture with their U.S. counterparts to reach an agreement on the delivery of this resource, but not within the timeframe set by Trump, as she assured it is not feasible.
First, she explained that the country's own water needs must be met first, as stipulated by the Treaty. Second, it is not viable due to the size of the pipeline that carries water to the Rio Grande.
Despite the tariffs on China, Trump is now pressuring Claudia over the Water Treaty.
"It is even a physical impediment, and even the U.S. government knows that," she said.
"What there is is the willingness to deliver the amount of water that is owed from previous years, in accordance with what the treaty states," Sheinbaum said.
