Chiapas Governor Proposes Arming Police with Very High-Powered Weapons

The governor of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, announced that he will present an initiative to allow state security corporations to carry very high-powered weapons, with the aim of strengthening operational capabilities against crime. The proposal will be sent to the Congress of Chiapas, and if approved, the bill will be promoted before the Congress of the Union. In a communiqué, the head of state detailed that the initiative seeks to equip state forces with higher-capacity weaponry. In this regard, he stated that it is “so that our security corporations can carry very high-powered weapons and be the first state public security corporation in Mexico to be equipped with such weaponry,” in order to face crime. In this sense, he added that the proposal is framed within the actions taken during the first year of the current administration in terms of security. Among them, he highlighted the launch of an Immediate Reaction Force, aimed at regaining control of roads, municipalities, and regions, as well as the strengthening of equipment and the professionalization of police bodies. As part of this strategy, the state administration reported the acquisition of a Black Hawk helicopter, 25 armored vehicles, 10 state-of-the-art drones, and 250 cameras, in addition to other technological resources. Likewise, he indicated that the salary of security personnel has been increased and additional equipment has been delivered, which includes 895 vehicles, 13,315 defense kits, and 102,985 personal protection kits. The government of Chiapas also informed that these actions have been accompanied by internal purification processes and the detention of public servants, as part of the measures to strengthen security institutions. Ramírez Aguilar emphasized that the strategy has been developed in coordination with the federal government and agencies such as Defense, the Navy, the National Guard, and the federal and local prosecutor's offices. Finally, he affirmed that the joint work aims to “continue guaranteeing the tranquility and peace of the people of Chiapas”.
