Mexican Authorities Identify Perpetrators of Attack on Lawmakers

Mexico City, Jan 30. Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed this Friday that the armed attack against two local opposition lawmakers from the Citizen Movement (MC) party in the state of Sinaloa was perpetrated by a faction of the 'Los Chapitos' group, linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. 'We have advances in the investigation. We are working directly in the security cabinet, in the institutions of the federal government, it was a cell (faction) of 'Los Chapitos' and we will soon announce progress,' he stated during the morning presidential conference from Tijuana. The secretary was referring to the attack that occurred on Wednesday against deputies Sergio Torres and Elizabeth Montoya as they were leaving the local Chamber of Deputies, and due to which the legislator remains in serious condition and the deputy lost an eye. García Harfuch indicated that the case is being handled directly by the federal security cabinet, in coordination with local authorities, as part of the actions to clarify the facts and find those responsible. The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha, ordered the state secretary of Public Security, Oscar Rentería Schazarino, to deploy an operation to search for and capture those responsible. Likewise, Mexico's Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), sent 1,600 agents to Sinaloa on Thursday to reinforce security in the region. The state of Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico, is experiencing a deep crisis of violence since late 2024 due to an internal power struggle between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, which the United States declared a terrorist group last year. 'Authorities reveal that a faction of 'Los Chapitos' attacked deputies in northwest Mexico'.
