Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has stated that elementary and middle school textbooks will not be changed. She emphasized that they are part of the education system's transformation under the 'New Mexican School'.
Sheinbaum Pardo clarified that only minor modifications will be made to incorporate information about women into the history of the country, such as Josefa Ortiz, Leona Vicario, Gertrudis Bocanegra, Manuela Rodriguez, and Margarita Maza.
These remarks came after the dismissal of Marx Arriaga as General Director of Educational Materials at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Arriaga had claimed that the government was seeking to alter the textbooks implemented during Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration.
Arriaga's connection to Alex Saab is considered the key reason for his removal. Last Friday, security and SEP personnel went to his office to inform him of his dismissal and to evict him. Arriaga posted a video on social media challenging the officials, saying, 'You just have to get me out of this institution.'
On Saturday, during a visit in Tlaxcala, Sheinbaum Pardo assured that the textbooks 'will not change,' responding to Arriaga's allegations. She urged students not to be afraid, saying, 'They are with an obradorista, don't be afraid, officers.'
