Selection Process for New Head of Mexico's Superior Audit of the Federation

Mexico's Chamber of Deputies has initiated the selection process for a new head of the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF), the body responsible for auditing public spending. Ninety-two candidates have registered, including the current head who is running for re-election. The process includes a rigorous selection and parliamentary vote.

The Chamber of Deputies has registered 92 applicants for the position of head of the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF), the body responsible for overseeing federal public spending. The current head, David Colmenares, concludes his term this month and has registered for re-election. The process is carried out in accordance with the call approved on February 18 by the Commission to Monitor the Superior Audit of the Federation. The appointment corresponds exclusively to the Chamber of Deputies and must be approved by the vote of two-thirds of the legislators present in the Plenary, as established in Article 79 of the Constitution. Among those registered are profiles with a background in auditing and fighting corruption, such as Muna Dora Buchahin, former director of Forensic Audits of the ASF; María de la Luz Mijangos Borja, anti-corruption prosecutor of the FGR, and Gerardo Lozano, former special auditor for Financial Compliance. Also on the list are Agustín Caso, former special auditor for Performance of the ASF; Ramón Santos Navarro, former auditor general of Veracruz; and Alejandro Reynoso Gil, auditor general of Nuevo León. Selection Process Applicants had to prove, among other requirements, to be Mexican citizens by birth, be at least 35 years old, enjoy a good reputation, not have been convicted of intentional crimes, and have a minimum of 10 years of experience in public expenditure control and auditing. They also had to present a statement of interests and declare themselves not to be delinquent in alimony payments. The reception of applications took place from February 19 to 28. Subsequently, the Commission will review the documentation and verify compliance with requirements within five days of the closure, a stage that will conclude no later than March 5. Then, the list of considered suitable candidates and the interview schedule will be published in the Gaceta Parlamentaria. Following the hearings, the Commission will formulate, within a maximum period of three days, a report with the shortlist that it will propose to the Plenary. This report must be submitted to the Board of Directors no later than March 11 for voting. The designated person will head the ASF during the 2026-2034 period and will be responsible for reviewing the public account and the use of federal resources.
