Ex-wife of Vice Admiral Reveals Links to Suspected Fuel Smuggler

Violeta Verónica Sánchez Chávez, who was married for 31 years to Vice Admiral René Alberto Canto Oliva, former commander of the Sixteenth Naval Zone, spoke about her ex-husband's relationship with retired Captain Miguel Ángel Solano, alias "Mike" or "El Sol", who is currently a fugitive and is accused of being part of a supposed fiscal huachicol network with the participation of businessmen, marines, and customs officials. A case in which Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farias Laguna—currently detained— and his brother, Rear Admiral Fernando Farias—a fugitive—, nephews by marriage of the former Secretary of the Navy, José Rafael Ojeda Durán, have been named. Sánchez Chávez recounted that her knowledge of Solano is limited to what her ex-husband told her. She explained that although she could not confirm the exact nature of their relationship, she knew that Captain Federico Castro Domínguez, another of the names appearing in the investigations into fiscal huachicol, who was very close to her then-husband, presented them to each other, as he worked with him when he was commander of the Special Operations Unit of the Navy. She said that her ex-husband mentioned to her on several occasions that Solano had been invited to eat at the Unit: "Yes, I heard him talk about him several times, that's why I recorded the name of Mike," she pointed out. Additionally, she recalled that in October 2021 her then-husband communicated a message to her that, according to her, came from Solano and in which he threatened her after a conversation about pending promotions in the Navy that she had with the wife of Ojeda Durán. "As military personnel and members of the Armed Forces, everyone does favors for each other, everyone knows each other," she said. Sánchez Chávez explained that she provided the information she had to the internal control body of the Navy and requested that an investigation be carried out. However, she pointed out that she received no response or follow-up from the authorities. "That one of the Farias said that if I didn't stop talking to the secretary's wife, they were going to get rid of me". When questioned about the possible relevance of her ex-husband's relationship with Solano to the authorities, Violeta Sánchez considered that she went to various prosecutor's offices, although she noted that her main concern is the safety of her family: "I consider that we are at risk". She affirmed that she had suffered violence during her marriage and said that the situation worsened after her then-husband passed on said threat and after several episodes of "extreme violence" by her ex-husband, such as an attempt to strangle her after seeing in his phone the name of a person who sent him messages. She recounted that in 2022 she began to review the phone he gave her after assaulting her, as a way to "show that he had nothing to hide". Explaining that, by exploring the locations through Google, she noticed that during her work hours, Canto Oliva repeatedly appeared in the area where an apartment linked to Solano was located: "At different times, for about three hours, two hours, I saw him there". Sánchez detailed that this information corresponded to dates from the year 2020 and clarified that she did not perform any special manipulation to obtain the data, but rather it was a natural follow-up through Google's location function. The ex-wife of the vice-admirante emphasized that this information allowed her to verify atypical movements of her ex-husband during her work hours, although she cannot ensure direct relationships with Solano or other people: "The only I know is that he was out of his workplace, there and in other places, but very frequently in that work area". Violeta Verónica expressed her concern for the safety of her family due to the knowledge these people have about them and the possible reprisals.
